Online Presence
Unfortunately, a lot of people can be quite shy on trying to show themselves to the world and not being able to getcertain contacts in their industry.
Before establishing an online presence, at least in my opinion, you should gather at least some material to show what you are capable of. Be it : level design, general development documents or programming scripts. You would to show that the industry you are adressing, you A : Have the knowledge to and understanding of the industry. And B : You have the will and skill to show what you can provide to the industry and its user space.
Even though the general rule of actually makin yourself known is through YouTube and LinkedIn, but that wont really always help. Since not everyone who is in your sphere of interest will see your video and people can easily just miss your LinkedIn profile. So lets go a step further and adress Discord servers. In my opinion, they are underrated since Discord is not really acknowledge as a platform where there are a lot of developers (That is subject to change). So why not try and go Discord Server hunting?
Once you find such servers or get interest from other social spaces, dont go full out. Try an easy approach. Give only what is ask and depending on the reaction of Job employer, you can add just tiny bit extra to see if they are actually interested in your work and if they ask for more.
Usually, job employers ask for specific tasks to be completed. Show them that you can do it and then plan out how to make the completed task even better. But not by much as it can lead eventually to burnout.
Try and study the employer and try not to go off topic when being asked to do something as employers look for people who are able to do specific tasks. If they see that you go off topic on a constant basis, for them, that shows that you are unable to concentrate on your job.
How often should you promote your work will be depending on what you do. For example : If you make Kernel programming for Linux Kernel, then its preferable that you update your work progress at least once a week, since the Linux Kernel updates is changing quite hectic, its important for other people to know, at which stage you are. Study how open you can be in terms of change, that is why (Again taking Linux Kernel development as an example) in Linux Kernel development you can change what ever you wish, since its the philosophy of Linux. But if we take cyber-security, thats where you will have to limit to whom you inform about certain changes as such information may be leaked and be used by the wrong hands.
