Freelancing
A free lancer is a hunter for contracts. Companies set out specific tasks with rewards and only you decide which task to take (The reward for completing the task will vary and may subject to change if you contact the company). In my opinion, the main skill that a free lancer should have, is not to over do your work. As most of the times, you do not have agreement with the contractor that if you do more then you will be paid more...That will happen utterly rarely but the contractor will outright deny increase of payment since you initally did not agree to anything.
Promoting yourself as a free lancer is almost like a lotery. One strategy is being completing tasks for a limited amount of contractors who give out contracts on a constant basis. That way, when they see that you specifically, they will give the priority to you in the future instead of someone else...Who knows, maybe in future they might even offer you a job position.
To be seen as a professional by clients, you should be able to speak their language and you must try and get must much details as you can from clients. Communication between the clients and workers can be sometimes misleading and people can get confused. So to avoid some confusion the worker must immedeatly ask for details, details and details about what the client wants.
The main drawback of free lancing is that, if you're not careful enough with the statements of the contract, you might be deceived. As most free lancing platforms cannot do anything if you dont get paid for your work if you didnt read the contract properly. You are just not legally protected on such platforms and you cant really do anything. But there is some benefit in terms of actually completing a task for a company within given deadlines.
Freelancing and indie development dont appeal to me personally, whilst they can give me experience and portfolio, nobody can give me any guarantees of at least some form success in career.Establishing my own business will be a hassle at the start financially, as I wont have an instant income. Therefore starting a business, you will have to get into the mentality that you have to pay off to other people rather than yourself. So you will have to pay back to the investors, taxes and your workers whilst you barely get anything out of it. Usually such situation continues for approximately 1 to 2 years but it may change depedning on the situation.
My general advice to the IT and Video game development industry is that, you should stop thinking if you can pay back someone or not, start thinking how to create a master piece with limited resources like in the good old days.
